Why Buy Milk? Make Your Own Almond Milk

If you are like me, I buy coconut milk or almond milk when I go get groceries. I use it for baking and mostly my smoothies! Over time, it adds up. I decided that making my own milk would be much more rewarding, healthier, and relaxing. I have had homemade almond milk before but I have never made it myself. It did take about 15 minutes but it is a great stress relief (when you're squeezing the milk out).

Keeping Track of Your Health and Fitness

It is hard to fall off the fitness and health wagon when you don't write it down. I find that I eat better and am more likely to work out when I have to jot it down. Why? This is because I physically see all the things I eat that day and I am more likely to want to write something healthy down so I eat a lot healthier. Read more for some tips on how to create a "Health and Fitness Journal".

Bentonite Clay for Health & Detoxification

Bentonite clay is a volcanic ash that has many uses and benefits. It is high in minerals and is very nourishing for the body internally and externally. The deposits of this amazing ash are located in Fort Benton, Wyoming. Hence, where the name "bentonite" came from. It was first recorded as being used in Mesopotamia, many thousands of years ago.

What makes it effective??
Bentonite clay has a high negative ionic charge. This is why it helps for detoxification in the body. The negative ions bind to positive ions in the body such as bacteria, pesticides, pathogens, and heavy metals. Negative ions are highly beneficial to our bodies. We are exposed to them when we are by oceans, forests, and waterfalls. They provide an overall feeling of well being and peace. When do you not feel nourished and refreshed at the beach?

Benefits of taking bentonite clay:
-cleanse the skin, liver, and colon
-helps to balance the beneficial bacteria in the colon
-adds strength to the immune system
-helps assimilate nutrients throughout the body
-remineralizes tissues and cells
-alkalizing
-protection from radiation

Bentonite clay has been shown to help:
-foot allergies
-arthritis
-cataracts
-diarrhea
-stomach ulcers
-acne
-anemia

How to use it:
-Mix 1-2 tsp of bentonite clay powder in 8-12oz of water. You want to drink it on an empty stomach. Take it for 3 days straight, then break for 4 days, and slowly decrease the amount of time you take a break from using it. This is to acclimate the body.

I have used bentonite clay as a mask on my face in order to pull toxins out of the skin and tissue. You just have to mix a little bit with some water or apple cider vinegar, and it really makes your skin shine! It is nice that it can be used internally or externally. It is a very versatile item to have! You can buy it in powder, gel, or pill, but try to obtain the powder if you can!

Go Green! Cleaning Recipes

Michael and I recently got ourselves a little baby bird and strong cleaning fumes are extremely harmful for their poor little respiratory systems. I could only imagine what it does to them! But what could it do to us? Because of this, we have decided to transition into a more green and sustainable lifestyle, starting with our cleaning products. Below are recipes for an all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, and a bar that will suck the stink from your trash!

Healing Wounds: The Natural Way

There are many easy to use home remedies that can help in times of need when you accidentally injure, cut yourself, or need some healing. You may not always have access to the items I am going to post, but it is good to know just in case. It is also good to have some of these items in a first aid kit just in case. Plants and herbs have been used to heal people for thousands of years, but recently we have turned towards man made chemical products to help out. I am not trying to say that they aren't effective, but if there is a natural way, it is always better for you and your body overall. Try these natural remedies out these simple remedies and see how they work for you ;)

Aloe vera gel - use on cuts, wounds and scrapes of all kinds. very soothing! can also be mixed with water and used internally to cleanse

Essential oils - lavender, chamomile, and tea trea oils are highly effective and are good for burns, cuts, and any rashes you may have. Make sure you buy 100% essential oil to make sure no chemicals are used and that it isn't diluted!

Witch hazel - perfect for sunburns, or as an aftershave! Has a very soothing scent :)

Cayenne pepper - powdered cayenne can stop bleeding if you dust your wound with it. Just don't eat too much, because it is very spicy

Honey - great for treating burns, but also wonderful for...

  • Amputations
  • Bedsores
  • Leg ulcers (diabetic foot and leg ulcers, varicose ulcers, leprosy ulcers, sickle cell ulcers, et cetera.)
  • Malignant ulcers
  • Fistulas
  • Cracked nipples
  • Surgical wounds
  • Gunshot and trauma-induced wounds, including those to the skull and abdomen
  • Cuts, abrasions, and puncture wounds

  • Black Pepper - effective at stopping bleeding

Apple Cider Vinegar - great for cleaning all wounds. good to combine with honey and cayenne pepper as well

Echinacea - helps to speed up the healing of wounds

Marigold - great stimulator for producing new tissue and helping progress healing

    Feng Shui: A Short Introduction

I have been interested in Feng Shui recently in order to create a positively energized living area. I have read articles, books, and looked at many pictures. If you are interested in creating a house with balanced energies, keep reading! Feng Shui has been around for over 3,000 years and originated from China. It literally means wind water for both wind and water is needed for a long and healthy life.

    What you need:
    • Your house or room you want to work on
    • a compass (if you have a smart phone, you can get a free app. You can also find a boyscout!)
    • a bagua (A bagua is the energy map shaped like an octagon. Above is a simpler map I have found that can be used as the bagua)
First, create a list of all the activities you do with your family (or whoever lives there). If possible, each room will be the main focus of those activities. If not, create defining boundaries. For example, the bedroom is sleeping. If you need a TV in the bedroom, enclose it or put a cloth over it.

Second, use the bagua to help you with each part of the room. For example, the far right corner of your room is the love corner which can have more of the Earth element than any other element.

    The Elements
    Water Element
    • use the colors blue and black
    • use see through glass, windows, or vases
    • use wavy and flowing shapes or fabric patterns
    • include the following items in this area: fountains, fish tanks, faucets, toilets, sinks, tubs, and paintings or pictures with water scenes (like beaches or lakes)
    • to enhance, also increase the use of water's parent element: metal
    Wood Element
    • use the color green
    • use rectangular shapes for furniture (bookcases, picture frames, pillows)
    • use striped patterns for fabric
    • incorporate plants or nature scenes
    •  include the following items in this area: wood furniture, paper products (books and magazines)
    • to enhance, also increase the use of wood's parent element: water
    Fire Element
    • use the color red (any shade, coral, dusty red, brick, burgandy)
    • use triangular shapes or things in threes (like picture frames or candles)
    • use things that incorporate fire: stoves, fireplace, candles
    • include images that invoke strong feelings of intamacy
    • to enhance, also increase the use of Fire's parent element: wood
    Earth Element
    • use earth tones and the color yellow
    • use square shapes (coffee table, pillows, checkered fabric)
    • use brick, stone, and terra cotta
    • use objects that are low to the ground (coffee table, ground pillows, etc)
    • to enhance, also increase the use of Earth's parent element: fire
    Metal Element
    • use the color white
    • use circular shapes (tables, mirrors, rugs, lamps)
    • use shiny or metallic objects
    • incorporate organization systems like filing cabinets, closets and storage bins
    • to enhance, also increase the use of Metal's parent element: Earth

How to Gaze at the Sun

In this post, I am going to teach you how to stare at the sun safely for your health and well being. Everything in the universe is created from sound and light energy, so staring at the sun is like taking in pure energy straight from the source. Many people in India have been studied who have sungazed and do not require food anymore because they are taking all of their energy in from the sun and converting it for use in the body. Just know that food should not be our only method of nutrition. The sun is one of those alternative forms. Do not be afraid of it or block yourself from it by using sunscreens. The sun itself will not cause cancer, if anything, the chemicals in the sunblocks will cause the cancers that people are so afraid of. Also, do not wear sunglasses. They filter out the important light spectrum that we need to survive and thrive optimally. Sungazing is an ancient practice, and should be practiced regularly to receie it's many benefits. Everyone has their own personal experience with it, but I urge you to try it and see how it goes. Just remember, do not hold fear in your heart for the sun keeps all life alive and thriving. Without it, we would not be here. Everything and everyone depends on everything else in the universe. Express love for the beauty of light while you stare at the sun because gratitude is important.

    Benefits from Sungazing
    -Increased energy*
    -Decreased need for food*
    -Improved eyesight*
-Increased spiritual activation and connection with higher self*
    -Chakra activation*
    -Elevated mood*
    -Cure all diseases*
-Ancient practice of connecting to source*
    -Best of all..... IT'S FREE!
(*these claims are not scientifically backed)

You want to sungaze an hour after the sun has risen, or an hour before the sunsets. You can check your local times to see when it is safest. During this hour gap, the UV index is at 0. The sun will NOT HARM your eyes. If anything, it will improve your eyesight!

    Directions
    1. Gaze only an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset
    2. Stare directly at the sun with eyes open (you can blink of course). Start with 10 seconds per day and increase your time by 10 seconds every day. If the clouds are out then repeat the time from the last sunny day that you observed. Sungaze everyday until you have reached 45 minutes, then do a 15 minute maintenance sungaze per day.
    3. When you gaze, stand on sand or dirt. This is to fully ground the bodies electromagnetic energies while taking in the suns energy. If sand isn't available, stand on these in order: bare dirt, mud, road, concrete (also try not to stand in water, or walk on grass or rocks)
    4. Go for a 45 minute walk DAILY in addition to your sungazing practice. Try to do this barefoot. If you do barefoot walking, your feet might be sore for a few weeks, but you will get used to it. "If mind accepts, body will adapt. If body adapts, mind accepts"

    TIPS:
    -Sunrise is stronger than sunset
-If sungaze time is too long, you can split between sunrise and sunset
-Soften your gaze around the sun, and don't focus on one exact point

Let me know if you have any questions about this wonderful practice :)
Remember that you are a sovereign being of light, and are oh so powerful. Shine as bright as the sun everyday, and pave the way for love and positive change.

    Eating Out as a Vegan

Many of you may or may not know that I (, Karel) started eating vegan at the end of March. Why vegan? Before, it was for health. Now, it is because I think all beings are equal and humans are not superior. To me vegan is non-violence towards all beings. This also means inclusive and not hurtful words, being kind at heart, and being a loving person. I feel very passionate about being equal towards all beings and I think vegan is how I can encompass this belief.

I have recently realize how difficult it is to eat out at restaurants. Not because people don't offer vegan food (they do, almost always), but people are so closed minded about it. So here are some ways to help all you vegans out there eat at yummy restaurants.

    1. Be prepared. Check out the menu before hand and write down what you want! This will ensure that you will definitely have something to eat.
    2. Check out Happy Cow. They have a lot of restaurants on there to show what are vegetarian and vegan friendly!
    3. Call them. Ask questions before you actually go it. I find that waiters and waitresses get impatient with me. Realize that they have other people to wait on. Do your homework and find out before you go in.
    4. Don't forget to check out the sides. Sometimes that is your best option. For example, today I ordered a side of fruit, a side of veggies, and a side of potatoes. I was full and it was all vegan!
    5. Check out Yelp too. If you type in vegan, a bunch of results will show up. Click on the restaurant, and search vegan again (it's in the middle of the page). You can see the person's comment that had the word vegan in it. This really helps me figure out what to order.
    6. Regardless of number 3, ask questions. It doesn't hurt to ask and you can get a clear answer right away.
    7. Sometimes it is just better to tell them that you are allergic to mean, dairy, and eggs. They are more careful when preparing your food when allergies are involved.
    8. Eat before (if you know they really do not have anything) or bring some snacks.
    9. Don't forget about the butter! Ask if they cook with butter.
    10. Most importantly, be polite and nice.

What have you experienced when going out to eat? What do you tell the waiters and waitresses (vegan or allergies)? Have you had any bad (or positive!) experiences when going out?

    Raw Chocolate Cookie Dough Balls

This is a great recipe because it's raw, vegan, gluten free, healthy, and super satisfying! Everyone likes a yummy treat once in a while, but those strawberry poptarts aren't going to do much for your health. Instead of empty sweet calories, it's more awesome to make something that your body  truly craves being rich in living minerals, enzymes, and energy. You don't have to feel guilty about eating these cookie dough balls, so enjoy them and keep backup for when you want an awesome lightly sweet snack. Karel and I made these last night and they were delicious!

    Recipe

2/3 Cup Raw Rolled Oats (can buy gluten free if desired, or even used soaked whole groats)
    2/3 Cup Raw Cashews
    1 tsp Vanilla Extract
    2 tsp Honey
    1 tsp Himalayan Salt
    2 Tbsp Cacao Powder
    2 Tbsp Cacao Nibs

Extras: add coconut flakes, goji berries, dates, or maca to spice these up more :)

    Directions
    1. Blend the cashews and oats in a food processor until a flour consistency is reached. Try to blend it as much as possible (unless you want more chunky cookie balls)
    2. In a bowl add your cashew oat bled with the vanilla, salt, and honey. Stir with a wooden spoon, and then add the cacao nibs once mixed thoroughly
    3. Taste your creation! Add a little water to the mixture so that when you roll the balls it will help them stick together. You can also add more honey if you would like it sweeter
    4. Roll the mixture into balls or whatever shape you would like
    5. Roll the balls in the cacao powder (cacao is pretty strong and can be a bit bitter, so test how much you want on the outsides of your balls)
    6. ENJOY!

Try making these and let us know what you think :)

Benefits and Reflection: Being on a Plant-Based Diet

When I say diet, people tend to freak out. I run a fitness blog also and "diet" is such a bad word in the fit community. However, people fail to see that everybody has a diet, whether it be healthy or not, you  have a diet. Anyway, I have incorporated a plant-based diet at the end of March and have seen nothing but amazing things. This is something I am super passionate about and I love talking to people about it! Comment about your experiences, comments, concerns, or questions!

Note: I will be putting together a transitioning guide to a plant-based diet in hopes on getting my family on board. If it goes well, Michael and I will be selling the guide. This would include an ebook and possibly a workbook. It will include our research, movies to watch, recipes to try, and more. Please comment if you are interested!

    What is a plant-based diet?
A plant-based diet incorporates only eating things that come from plants. This includes mostly fruit, veggies, legumes, grains, beans, seeds, etc. There are three categories: vegan (no meat, eggs, milk, cheese, dairy), lacto-vegetarian (no meat or eggs, dairy is fine), and lacto-ovo-vegetarian (no meat, but eggs and dairy is okay). I personally think vegan is plant-based because eggs and dairy do not come from a plant. However, it is better than the alternative!

    Benefits
    • energy (you have more energy throughout the day)
    • less breakouts (usually the month after you start you break out a ton because it is your body's way of filtering the bad stuff. Then your face is clear. I believe that breakouts are directly linked to food)
    • high in fiber (I mean, you eat basically fruits and veggies)
    • high in nutrients and vitamins
    • saving so many lives (It takes more food to feed animals. This food can go to people.)
    • lowering your carbon footprint (Global warming is real and "animal protein contributes50% more greenhouse gases" than transportation)
    • you become more compassionate (see reflection below)
    • you save money (Meat is expensive, period.)
    • lose weight (I was not trying to lose weight when I started and I lost 20lbs.)

But where do you get your protein? What if I don't get enough iron? Is this bad for my health?
This is far from bad. Before I started I had high cholesterol. When I got my blood test back recently, not only my cholesterol had decreased by a lot, but I am getting enough nutrients in every aspect.
Of course, before starting, consult your doctor. We are not nutritionists, doctors, or professionals. This is just my findings and research.

"The China Study, a 20-year comprehensive study of nutrition conducted by Cornell and Oxford Universities and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, describes how the typical standard american diet, which has become very high in animal protein and unhealthy fats and low in fiber, promotes substantially more chronic disease and obesity than a more plant-based, whole-foods diet. The study further illustrates the fact that much of the world lives on a plant-based diet, consuming only small amounts of animal protein due to cost and availability, with much less chronic disease and obesity than the United States." (source)

    My Reflection
I started doing this for the health benefits. As time went by, I learned more and more about what is happening to the animals and how it contributes to destroying Mother Earth. It had turned me into a more loving and compassionate person. Sometimes it becomes difficult and I want to stop, but I think about that there is only good that comes to it. The only negative aspect of this diet is what your friends think. I have found many people very closed minded to my lifestyle change. I challenge you to educate yourself and educate others on what you have found on eating plant-based and loving the world and others around you.

    What those famous vegans say!

“I’ve also been on a pretty strict plant-based diet for 4 months now – feeling stronger, fitter, healthier and more productive. I ride longer distances on my bike, can do more pull-ups than ever, and my brain seems to have a larger capacity for new projects, problem solving, songwriting, and fielding random questions. My health and strength make me a better performer and all that combined gives me more confidence to go out in the world and shine my light. It also makes me a lot better in bed. Just sayin…” (Jason Mraz, singer)

“When I was 23, 24, I used to have a really bad runny nose, mucus, tons of acne, reddishness all over. A woman on a bus I took looked at me and said I was lactose intolerant. (She said), ‘Stop dairy for three days, and all this is going to go away.’ I stopped dairy, and sure enough it was gone three days later, never to return except when I get dairy accidentally.” (Woody Harrelson, Hunger Games, actor)

    The Benefits of Rising Early

Most people dread getting out of bed, and it can be one of the most daunting tasks of the day. Believe it or not, people tend to be more productive and have a higher sense of accomplishment and well-being when they wake up early in the morning. This is partly because you get to awaken with the sun, but also because your mind is more fresh, clean, and productive when you have an early kickstart. As I write this it is 6:48am, and I woke up at 5am. I felt ready to go and start my day. Yes, of course you have to get used to it and it isn't going to be the easiest thing to begin with, but as you get used to it, you will notice how awesome it is! What do you stay up until 2am doing anyways? Watching tv shows or stalking your friends on facebook? That's what I thought ;).

For the record, many artists, successful businessmen, and CEO's wake up early to get the day started to have an "edge" over the competition and increase their creative juices.

    Benefits of waking up early

Eating healthier: Many people skip breakfast, and it is one of the most important meals of the day! Waking up earlier will insure that you have time for this precious meal and that you are nourished and can get your metabolism kickstarted. You are also less likely to eat junk food later if you eat a healthy well-balanced breakfast.

Preparing food for the day: A lot of people don't have time to prepare meals for the day, or even get done what they truly want to accomplish. Instead of feeling rushed by waking up 10 minutes before work, wake up earlier and prepare all your days meals and complete tasks. This is especially beneficial if you have kids too :). It is best to create a to do list the night before so you know exactly what you will do in the morning.

Less missed workouts: Waking up earlier allows you to do what you need to do in your day. This especially includes working out! You will have more energy and more motivation to boost your day with an awesome workout. Also, it will help in your consistency of exercising since you will have no excuses for not having enough time anymore.

Productivity: Many people who are successful in their business and life endeavors are usually early risers. You get more done in a day if you wake up earlier. Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison were two famous spokesmen for rising early. Basically when you rise early you have less distractions since most people aren't awake. You are also more efficient in the morning with less brain fog. Late at night the body is trying to shut down and prepare for sleep. Staying up late is counter intuitive and actually works against your natural circadian rhythm.

Reduced Stress: You don't have to rush any more throughout the day to get done what you need to do. This way when you get home from work later in the day you can truly relax knowing you have had an awesome productive day! You don't have to rush to get up, eat, and run off to work. You have time to enjoy yourself, watch the sunrise, listen to music, workout, shower, and whatever else you choose!

Better Quality Sleep: The body works best when it has a rhythm to it. You may not go to bed at the same time every night depending on how you ate, the amount of sunlight you were exposed to, and your overall activity level, but at least having a set waking schedule will help you to have some balance in your life. Being consistent is the key. Sporadic waking and sleeping patterns can shock and disrupt the body.

Sunrise: There is something special about watching the sunrise and seeing the world awaken from the darkness. It is a wonderful time for meditation, when the yin and the yang are in perfect balance.  It is also beneficial to stare at the sun as it rises. This practice is known as sungazing and can help increase your energy levels, spiritually awaken your divine powers, and reduce your use of food. It is taking pure light energy from the source. It may sound too good to be true, but it is actually an ancient practice that is perfectly safe within an hour after the sun has risen. This is when the UV index is 0, and it can cure bad vision. Look forward to a blog about this wonderful free nutritional energy source that we can all benefit from :)

    Cauliflower Crust Garlic Breadsticks

I found this recipe on Tumblr and decided to try it since I have never had cauliflower. I love trying new things and this recipe was yummy!!!

    Ingredients
    • 1/4 of a large head of cauliflower
    • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
    • 2 cloves garlic, grated or minced
    • 1 Tablespoon ground flax seed + 3 Tablespoon water (OR 1 egg, lightly beaten for non-vegans)
    • 4 oz your choice of soy cheese, divided (or mozzarella cheese, grated for non-vegans)
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian herb seasoning, divided
    • 1 pinch each salt and pepper
    • cooking spray (I just used oil on a paper towel)
    • marinara sauce for serving (for a healthy option, check and make sure there is no added sugar!)

    Directions

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a 9 by 5-in loaf pan with parchment paper so that the excess paper hangs over the sides; lightly spray or oil the parchment paper with cooking spray.
    2. If you are going to use flax seed + water instead of an egg, put together the two in a small cup. Let it sit until needed, mixing occasionally. It will turn into an "eggy" substance. (See first top pic)
    3. To "rice" the cauliflower, grate it on a cheese grater. I put it in my food processor using the grating part. You should have about 1 1/2 cups (lightly packed) of riced cauliflower. Put the riced cauliflower into a microwave safe bowl and microwaved (uncovered) until softened, about 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally (do NOT add water or anything else); cool slightly. (See second top pic)
    4. While cauliflower cooks, heat the oil in a small skillet over low heat; add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds to 1 minute, stirring constantly; cool slightly.
    5. To the bowl with the softened cauliflower, add the garlic, flax seed mixture (or egg), 3/4 of the cheese (reserving 1/4 for topping later), 1/4 teaspoon of the dried Italian herb seasoning (reserving 1/4 teaspoon for topping later), and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir to combine and spread into prepared loaf pan. Please Note: I am a poor college student and do not own such pan. I used a circle glass pan. I don't think it worked very well but it's up to you. Use what you have.
    6. Bake until the loaf is set and starting to turn golden, about 20 to 30 minutes. Line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper; use the parchment paper to life the loaf out of the loaf pan and carefully flip it over onto the lined baking sheet (so the bottom is on top). Bake until golden, about 10 minutes. (NOTE: I took mine out earlier because it was 8PM and was extremely hungry. Make sure its golden, or it will be somewhat soggy like mine) (See last top pic)
    7. Sprinkle the cheese on top along with the remaineing 1/4 teaspoon dried Italian herb seasoning. Put into oven until cheese has melted and golden in spots. Serve hot or warm.

Super Fast Creamy Avocado Pasta and Steamed Broccoli

I have had this recipe for a very long time. I recently started eating vegan and this recipe was perfect after a long day of classes and wanted something quick. If you like garlic and pasta and avocado, this is perfect for you! I would definitely make this recipe again. 5 Stars!

    Creamy Avocado Pasta
    Ingredients:
    • 1 medium sized ripe Avocado, pitted
    • 1/2 lemon, juiced
    • 1-3 garlic cloves, to taste (I used 4 and it was super garlicky, don't do it.)
    • 1/2 tsp  salt, or to taste
    • ~1/4 cup Fresh Basil
    • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
    • 2 servings/6 oz of your choice of pasta (I used quinoa elbows!)
    • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
    • garlic powder to
    • Half broccoli head

    Directions:
    1. Make your pasta like you usually do. Boil water, put pasta in, wait, drain. You know the drill. (During this, I had my broccoli steaming on top!)
    2. While your pasta is cooking, make the sauce. Put the garlic cloves, lemon juice, and olive oil into a food processor. Process until smooth. Then add the pitted avocado, basil, and salt. Process until smooth and creamy.
    3. When pasta is done cooking, drain and rinse in a strainer and place pasta into a large bowl. Pour on sauce and toss until fully combined. Garnish with lemon zest and black pepper. Serve immediately.

    Makes 2 servings.
Please note: This dish does not reheat well due to the avocado in the sauce. Please serve immediately.

I added extra seasoning and steamed broccoli to this recipe. What would you have as a side or add to the dish?

WHC: Be Concious When Grocery Shopping

This week be aware when you go grocery shopping!
    Check out Michael's post here!

There are many ingredients that are hidden in your food and we should become more aware on what we put into our bodies! If you are starting out, try picking two or three to keep an eye out of. Gradually keep an eye for all of those on those list. Good luck!

What ingredient(s) did you look out for this week?

    Nutritional Food Labels: Look out!

The great thing about food in todays day and age is that you can see a clear list of ingredients on the label. Although this is great, sometimes it can be hard to understand certain ingredients, or to even identify where they come from. A good rule is that if you can't pronounce something, you probably shouldn't be eating it, but I have come up with a nice list of ingredients to watch out for in order to help protect your health and well-being :)

Also just know that anything that happens in the manufacturing process does not need to be listed on the food label. For example, baby carrots are dipped in bleach to maintain their bright colors, but they don't have to list bleach on the ingredients list because it is part of the manufacturing process. Loop holes I tell you!

Top ingredients to look out for on food labels:

    • Hydrogenated Oils (ex: Hydrogenated Oil, Partially Hydrogenated Oil, Vegetable Shortening, Shortening) - The problem with hydrogenated oils is that they help preserve the shelf life of a product, but that means that it also lowers your life span as well! Avoid all hydrogenated oils because they are a trans fat. Also it is good to know that if a food has less than 0.5g per serving of trans fats, they don't have to list it on the ingredient. (products such as skippy peanut butter and circus animal cookies have hydrogenated oils)
    • MSG (ex: Monosodium Glutamate, Autolyzed Yeast, Textured Vegetable Protein, Natural Flavorings, Sodium Caseinate) - MSG is very addictive and is harmful to our health. It can cause headaches, nausea, and weakness in the body, as well as not allowing us to absorb the full spectrum of nutrients from foods. A good example of a product that uses it is flaming hot Cheetos. Now I can understand why my cousin always wants to buy them every time we go to the grocery store. MSG has also been popularly used at a lot of Chinese restaurants, so make sure to ask them first. Also know that it doesn't always show up as just MSG on the label, check my ()'s above for all the ingredients it can be found in.
    • High Fructose Corn Syrup (ex: High Fructose Corn Syrup, Fructose, Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup Solids) - Corn syrup is genetically modified corn used for it's sweetening abilities at a low cost. Our bodies basically don't even recognize what it is and it can disrupt our hormones, and imbalance our bodies fat. It is incredibly sweet and is in EVERYTHING now a days. Avoid it at all costs because it increases your risk for diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer.
    • Sugars/Artificial Sweeteners (ex: sugar, evaporated cane juice, fructose, sucrose, aspartame, sucralose, rice syrup, saccharine, nutrasweet, sweet n' low, splenda, equal, sorbitol) - The issue with sugar is that is is overly processed, bleached, and not in it's natural state once it reaches that box of cookies you so desperately love. It acts as a poison in the body and can disrupt kidney function and some have even been linked to cancer. Above I have listed many forms that sugar can take on an ingredients list. Most things ending in -ose, are a sugar derivative. Replace conventional sugar in recipes with raw Agave, Molasses, Coconut Sugar, Honey. Theses are all much healthier and more in their natural state.
    • Artificial Colors/Dyes (ex: Red #40, Blue #1) - These have been linked to allergic reactions, asthma, and other health issues. They are usually derived from coal-tar derivatives in order to help enhance the color of food and make it more visually appealing.
    • Benzonate Preservatives  (ex: TBHQ, BHT, BHA) - These preservatives help to keep fats from going rancid in food, but it does come with a price. These have been linked to tumors, asthma, hyperactivity, and estrogen imbalance.
    • Bleached Flours (ex: bleached wheat flour, bleached white flour) - Bleached flours are stripped of all nutrients and are only empty calories. Look for foods made with flours that are unbleached and have whole grains. These will be more beneficial to your health!

This isn't a comprehensive list of everything, but a great starting point to help you figure out what is in the food you are eating. If you are unsure about certain ingredients or cannot pronounce them, then it is probably best to avoid it. Eat food in it's most natural state, or make it yourself. Stick to the outer edges of the grocery store, because this is where the freshest and healthiest foods are.

Thanks for reading! Please comment with any other key ingredients that you think may be good to know! :)

    WHC: Try Yoga

Your challenge this week is to try yoga.

Check out our past post on the benefits of yoga here.

You can try a class or do a youtube video.
Many yoga studios have great deals, check it out. I've done one that was $15 for a week. A typical yoga class is $15 a day, so this was an awesome deal.
If you already do yoga, try a different style.

Here are a couple links to some yoga videos:

    Increase Your Activity Levels

Ever since I got a FitBit, I have been doing little things to try to increase my steps and my activity levels. I have seen a difference in my energy and outlook on life. Even the small things can make a difference! Do you want to increase your activity levels? Here are a few ways:

    1. Stretch when you wake up and when you go to bed.
    2. Take the stairs.
    3. Park farther.
    4. Walk around during your lunch break.
    5. Do some housework everyday, like vaccuming, cleaning the windows, gardening. Not only will you get activity in, but your house will be cleaner!
    6. Stand instead of sitting (when watching TV, reading, doing homework, etc).
    7. Do exercise during commercials. (I don't watch tv but when a pandora commercial comes on, I do a wall sit or some crunches.)
    8. Go to class or meeting early and walk around for a little bit.
    9. Dedicate one song to dancing. Whenever Scream & Shout comes on, no matter what I am doing (unless I am driving), I have to get up and start dancing for that entire song.
    10. Take plenty of breaks when you have been sitting for a long time. Every 20 min of studying, I do a 30 second plank and some squats and then I get back to work. It helps with activity and focus.
What are some other ways that you have increased your activity levels during the day?

    WHC: Motivation Calendar

This week, create a motivation calendar.
My calendar is shown on the right.

Remember, do what makes sense for you.

    How I use my calendar:
    • Each sticker corresponds to something I did
    • 1 sticker for working out that day
    • 1 sticker for eating well
    • 1 sticker = $1 (towards healthy living/workouts)
    • I add up my stickers for the previous month and put it in the corner (so I know how much I have total)
    • Subtract when I bought something
What I got so far with my money (since 2012):
    • FitBit One
    • Balega work out socks
    • Brooks running shoes
    • Yoga mat
    • Cork yoga blocks
    • resistance bands
Why I like it: It gives me a visual on how I am doing. As you can see in my picture, I didn't do too great in the middle of the month (I got sick). When I see no star days, it motivates me to do something! It really helps. Also, I am a broke college student. So when I really want something, I look at my calendar and see if I have money for it! It really works for me.

Good luck! How was last week's challenge? What worked for you?

Stress: Tips to melt it away!

Stress is a big subject in today's world. We all have crazy responsibilities and sometimes life just feels as if it is speeding by at 1000mph! Stress negatively impacts our bodies, and can actually shorten our life span if we are exposed to it too often. It can be physically, emotionally, and spiritually draining on our bodies. Stress lowers our immune system responses causing us to be more susceptible to colds and viruses as well. It is no wonder now that I would always get sick right before all of my school finals.

Today I will be talking about some tips and foods to help you combat stress as much as possible!

    Tips for reducing stress
Eating habits: try to avoid stimulants like alcohol, black tea, coffee, and sugar. Chamomile tea is a good alternative to these because it acts to relax the body. Eat in a calm environment and try not to rush your meals.

Hot baths: a nice warm bath after a long day can really help to relax and calm the body. Use natural 100% essential oils to add some aromatherapy benefits!

Aromatherapy: natural essential oils are great for relieving stress. My favorites are lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint. You can either add a few drops to boiled water and breathe the steam, or invest in a vaporizer to add rejuvenating natural scents to you home.

Exercising: exercise helps to release feel good hormones that relax the body. Also, you are less likely to think about all the things you have to do if you are focusing on your body and breathing. Take part in regular exercise such as walking, running, biking, swimming, dancing, etc. Get moving!

Breathing: i know what you are thinking, "yes," I know how to breathe.. Well, there is more to breathing than you may think. During yoga, meditation, and tai chi, deep breathing techniques are utilized to increase the flow of oxygen, prana, and to help calm the body. Deep breathing and breathing exercises are important for you and can even help when you get headaches or are in a stressful situation. I am not going to explain any specific exercises, but if you are interested feel free to do further research

Massage: massage is great because it helps to increase the flow of stagnant blood, chi, and improves the lymphatic system. The best massages are from friends! Give and take :)

Talk to a friend: it can be a big weight off of our shoulders to share problems with people. After all, we are social beings and we need a support system. It is nice to feel needed and to help others with their issues or to just enjoy random conversation. This will reduce your stress by releasing blocked emotions.

    Foods to help relieve stress
When we become stressed, our blood pressure increases and our heart rate speeds up. Here are some natural foods to help lower your blood pressure naturally and increase your sense of well being:
    • Bananas
    • Beets
    • Artichokes
    • Cacao (natural chocolate, different from cocoa which is highly processed and stripped of nutrients)
    • Garlic
    • Blueberries (contain strong antioxidants to fight free radicals)
    • Goji berries

    WHC: Journal

Your goal this week is to keep a journal to track your food and workouts.

This can be as specific or easy as you want. You can track amounts or just the food.

An example of what my journal would look like:
    March 3: 1 hour yoga
B: pita, hummus, avocado, garlic, onion
L: salad (spinach, romaine, carrot, avocado, apple, hemp seeds, lemon, apple cider vinegar, olive oil)
    D: z-pizza (4 small slices, vegan)
S: banana, orange, vegan ice cream

Why? Studies show that you are more likely to be more aware of the types of food you are eating and the amounts when you write it down (I read this somewhere, I honestly do not remember where). I started doing this back in high school on and off. I realized that I was sick of writing down pizza and rice and burgers. Once you become more aware of what you are eating, you are more likely to eat more healthy!

    Getting Rid of Cankersores

So I have had a canker sore for a few days now and I knew there had to be a way to get rid of them! Canker sores are this small ulcers in the inside of your mouth and you notice all the time, especially when eating and drinking. It is most common between the ages of 10 to 20 years old. They are pretty common, can happen multiple times in a year, and lasts for about a week.

    Just to be Clear
Canker sores and cold sores are not the same thing. Cold sores are caused by a virus and are extremely contagious. They are usually located on the outside of the mouth.

    Causes of Canker Sores
There is no known direct cause of canker sores but the following may influence getting one:
    • stress or tissue injury
    • acidic foods (like citrus, strawberries, and tomatoes)
    • sharp tooth surface or dental appliance (like braces or dentures)
Home Remedies for Getting Rid of them
Please note: I only tried #1
    1. Salt: wash your hands, wet the tip of your finger, sprinkle salt on it, place on sore (I did this and it hurts! I let it do its thing and I would gargle with water and do it again. I did this twice a day for four days and it's gone!)
    2. Baking Soda: Make a paste with baking soda and water and put directly on sore. Rinse mouth with finished
    3. Honey: Dab honey on the spot to help soothe the pain
    4. Vodka, Rum, or Wiskey: Dab directly onto sore using a q-tip (this one is probably painful)
    5. Apple Cider Vinegar: Dab directly onto sore using a q-tip (this is also painful)
    6. Hydrogen Peroxide: Mix 1 part peroxide, 1 part water. Swish in mouth. (this is also painful)
We hope this helps! If it doesn't go away after a week, definitely talk to a doctor!

-1 Cup flour (you can use wheat, all purpose, or whatever you choose)
-1 tbsp sugar (you can use white sugar, but I recommend coconut sugar or agave)
    -2 tsp baking powder
    -1/4 tsp salt

Product Review: Diva Cup + Giveaway!

Before you keep reading, this post is geared towards the ladies (sorry guys!). Second, we are not sponsored or paid to publicize this product.

The product that I am reviewing is called the Diva Cup. It is a sustainable menstrual cup that you insert and clean and whatnot. There are other cups just like this like: the Moon Cup and the Keeper. I have linked them all so you can compare. This review is solely on the Diva Cup because I haven't tried the others.

Why I love the Diva Cup
    • It is only $40 ($30 on amazon!). If you think about it, you will save money. According to their website, you save about $100-150 per year!
    • You can keep it in for 12 hours. I hate having to go to the bathroom every 3-4 hours especially when I have class that long. This is the best solution.
    • I hate the bulkyness of pads, and tampons freak me out.
    • You don't feel it (for the most part). It definitely gets some getting used to in the beginning.
    • It is so easy to do normal things. I used to avoid working out and doing yoga because I hate worrying about it. Now, I don't even think about what to do.
Here is a video explaining menstrual cups. She doesn't talk about the DivaCup because it is newer but you should still watch it!

    Diva Cup Giveaway!

What you get: one Diva Cup (size 1)
